I came across this article the other day, I think from a Twitter post from one of my friends, and thought wow, that sounds a lot like motocross, so I decided to post the link here for you all to ponder. One thing I have always strived to do over the past 6 years with this website is to offer opinions (as educated as possible opinions at that) on how to best train for motocross. The website is not about my opinion entirely. I am not nearly as educated as most of the trainers who contribute to this site (Coach Seiji, Aldon Baker, Robb Beams, etc.), but I do however, have 15 years experience reading about, studying and even training riders and regular people on the principles of proper training. When I don't know something I search the web for research articles (usually PubMed, WebMD, and ACSM) and learn as much as I can before spouting off my opinion. In short, I try to do all of the leg work for you guys (and girls) so you don't have to spend the hours of time searching as I have for credible articles. Hopefully you see this site as your credible source and you're in and out in a flash with good intell and a better understanding of how to train for motocross.
So when I read this article, I thought, man that sounds a whole lot like our sport. I'm not pointing fingers at any particular trainer or coach in the industry saying that they are bad. Like all industries, there are good coaches and bad, good trainers and bad. I figure the cream will rise to the top and the few bad trainers who are in the sport will be gone soon enough. And please don't make the assumption that just because you don't see articles from a particular trainer here on Virtual Trainer that I think they are bad. I have asked just about every trainer in the business to participate and some just simply do not have the time. But keep this in mind while you read this article; just because a dude was fast on a motorcycle does not mean that he knows squat about training. Maybe he does....maybe he doesn't. That is for you to decide. Just keep that in mind the next time someone is telling you to do something (training-wise) and their only qualification is that they used to be fast....... - Virtual Trainer.
I’m going to go back to an argument I had with a guy about the efficacy of bench pressing for football players. All these months later, this issue still irritates the shit out of me – not because the guy I was arguing with was right or wrong, but because of the rationale behind it and the can of worms it opens up with regard to who we listen to and where we go for new training information.
To sum this up, I was told that the bench press has no application for football players, and that it’s more harmful than helpful. I disagree with this completely, but that’s not my issue. My issue is that the guy I was arguing with quoted two people who made this claim. One of these never played or coached football, but the other guy he quoted was a former Division I player who evidently benched over 450 pounds raw, which obviously means he spent some time benching. - Read More
