Is your toddler overweight? Now’s your best chance of staving off lifelong weight issues. Cut back on sweets and encourage active playtime.

Think your child is too young to have a weight problem? Think again. The earlier you tackle childhood obesity, the greater your chances of success. A Swedish study showed that obesity prevention tactics work best in children under the age of 5. While there is some level of success in treating school-aged kids for weight problems, efforts have not been so successful in adolescents. A second study, also presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Sweden, adds fuel to the reasons why achieving a healthy weight now is so important. Research suggests that boys who enter adulthood obese double their lifetime risk of early death. The best way to reduce their weight: Eliminate sweetened drinks, swap fruit for sugary treats, cut out processed foods and foods high in fat, and get them moving. And of course, setting a good example by eating right and exercising can help get your entire family engaged in health promoting activities and behaviors.
