I currenly have have basic knee braces and am shopping around for a good pair. I am also recovering from a spiral fractured tibia which was caused due to rotation. Would these braces also help prevent injuries like mine and give me good support when i get back on the bike?
Absolutely! That is the intended purpose of the Tether. To keep rotation of the knee joint to a minimum. My advice to you (and any one else for that matter) is buy this brace! And I don't make a dime from saying that.
i have the basic knee/shin guards, and i broke my hip, would these knee braces help out just becuase the rest of my leg feels weak.
At the end of the month I will be having an ACL reconstruction. I went down on my left side with the bike on my leg. The toe of my boot dug into the ground and rotated my knee. I did not have on knee braces but this brace and setup may have prevented my injury.
It is important to remember that the tether basically routes some of the rotational force away from a joint that is not designed to rotate to a joint that is more capable of rotating (from the hinge joint of the knee to the ball and socket joint of the hip). Boots also do a similar thing: they take rotational forces (among many other forces) and take that force away from the ankle (again a hinge) and moves it up to the knee, then with a knee brace and tether, you shuttle that up to the hip. My point is all the gear from the foot up transfers force up the kinetic chain of the leg to the hip so having enough strength, flexibility, etc. at the hip ultimately determines your eventual outcome. Your hip is MUCH more able to take rotational forces but it has to be strong and healthy. This means correct training still contributes to injury free status. Buying a knee brace helps but a knee brace cannot absorb all the forces that act on this joint and it will transfer forces to the hip so keep training correctly not just for your knee but for your hip!
