Hey,

I just bought my first road bike, a giant tcr. I have never ridden a road bicycle. My 1st goal is to supplement my training program for racing and I also want to be able to hang with a b group(about 18 mph pace) in a local group ride by spring time. I am in the Power endurance phase of my training(I'm not following the 19 week training program, but I am using it as a template, especially the cardio). Should I monitor my heart rate zones as well as time or should I set a goal for my first ride and try to reach it? I thought about trying to hold a 15 mph pace for 15 miles my first ride on the bike, but I don't want to put myself back by not staying in the correct zone/time for the phase that I am in. I appreciate any insight as well as other tips, like I said I have never ridden before. Thanks for the help.

If you goal is to become a better cyclist, then I suggest going to Training Peaks and buying a cycling specific training plan. The 19-week plan on the site only uses cycling as a method for cardio training with the main goal of being more fit on the motorcycle. There are much better pans to follow if you want to be faster on your road bike. I guess the main thing is is to decide what you want to be the best at. You can train specifically for cycling and then later on switch back to more MX specific training for moto. Either way, you will be fit enough to ride any amateur level race. Thanks for reading and good luck with your training!

Thanks a lot for your help. I think I will continue focusing on moto. Although I do hope to progress at cycling at the same time.

I think you may surprise yourself how good you are on the road bike. Riding a motorcycle takes a lot more effort and conditioning than riding a road bike. All the strength training and cardio will help you tremendously on the road.

JJP7,
Please contact me via email (robb3@earthlink.net) and I would be happy to provide you a basic cycling program for FREE because you follow RacerX VT! I will tweak it slightly so that it spills over into your needs on both the track and the open road. Thanks for posting on RacerX VT!
