I recently stumbled upon something that I had never heard about in all the years I've been training. Something called HRV (Heart rate variability).
It sounds like a miracle, a parameter that calculates when you can train hard and when to rest and recover.
But the sceptic in me tells me I would've heard a lot more about this if it were actually true. I don't think there was ever anything posted on HRV on the VT website as well...

So what do you trainers think about HRV training?

The only thing similar that I have used is morning HRV to backup what an athlete may be telling me that he or she if feeling. After waking, stay laying down and calm back down from waking. Take pulse for 10 sec then stand and take pulse for 10 sec. Write that down as a fraction and track. This is an old trick, started doing it in the 80's myself as a cyclist. Fatigue can cause the two numbers to get further apart (usually second # stays higher) or they both can go up (first number going up was a really bad sign for me personally.) Theory is that fatigue causes the recovery from the hydrostatic load of standing to take longer or the initial resting one will be higher due to fatigue. These numbers were again, just tracked and observed long term and then used to only back up what the athlete was saying. There are much more scientific recovery tracking systems now, especially using power in cycling, but my opinion is that they are simply back up to what the athlete is telling me for what that is worth. Haven't made a training decision yet based on any sort of recovery tracking system, only because of what an athlete is feeling.
