This has become a new passion and I'm goin to do some races with it, but the reason I started biking is to help me out with cardio because I hate running. I'm in college and going five days a week so may get to do motos once a week plus weekends. I do have more time to ride the road bike so how many miles a week should I be putting in?

Is your goal to become a better cyclist or motocross rider? How you train for each is very very different.

Make sure you manage your energy balance so that you keep your moto efforts productive. Moto efforts should be first on your priority and energy doling list. Cardio is all good but you don't want to do more cardio at the expense of moto if it doesn't actually help your overall moto ability.

There are a few cycling and cardio related articles on the website that come to mind.

I agree with Tim, if you want to do good at cycling races do cycling specific training, if you want to do better at MX then do MX related training. In saying that thou the bicycle is a great way of getting fit for mx.

I can suggest a few sessions for you that will benefit your mx and I also presume you are not racing 30min motos? If so try some of these.

1) Tempo: Warm up 60min zone 2 and 3: Follow with 60 minutes in high zone 3 and zone 4. Warm down 30 min zone 2. Self selected cadence

2) Warm up 45 min zone 2 and 3: Followed by 3 x 15 minutes zone 4 with 10 minutes rest in zone 2 between repeats. Warm down 30 minutes zone 2.

3) BLOWOUTS: Warm up 45 min zone 2 and 3: Follow with 2 x 10 minutes at Zone 4 with 15 minutes rest between each repeat. At the end of the 10 minute zone 4 interval raise your heart beat by 3 beats for the next minute then raise by another 3 beats for the next min etc. Until you blow. Recover in zone 2 for 30 min after both intervals.

I enjoy the 45 minute cycling / spinning classes at my local gym. Are the benefits of leg strength, stamina and cardio fitness comparable to a 45 minute road bike workout?
