I just happened to come across this interview with Aldon Baker from a year ago.

In the interview, Aldon states, "Obviously, they're not so much endurance athletes..."

This is something I have been thinking about a lot recently. What portion of motocross is endurance?

In Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training by Bompa and Haff (2009), the following guidelines are given (with scientific references) for some sports that may be close to motocross:

Sport Event or Position Phosphagen Glycolytic Oxidative
Cycling, 4,000m 20% 50% 30%
motor sports 0% 0-15% 85-100%
Rowing 20% 30% 50%
Rugby 30-40% 10-20% 30-50%
Soccer Halfback 60% 20% 20%

My question is: where would you put motocross in this breakdown? My initial (and of course uneducated guess) is something like this:
Motocross 5% 35% 60%
Supercross 15% 45% 40%

I would probably say:

MX: 10% 40% 50%
SX: 10% 50% 40%

Remember that the first fuel system is very, very short lived and is mostly due to eccentric contractions in both cases. Every jump landing, g-out, any time you have to soak up an obstacle or bump is eccentric but the consecutive time between phosphate reloading opportunity is pretty short. I would think that a 3 second burst in mx or sx would be pushing the long side before at least partial reloading can happen (in the air, turns, not as rough, accelerating, etc.) A lot of it also happens as a correction to the bike bouncing, skipping, etc.
