Virtual Trainer has now been on the air for a little over a year with little or no repeats. When I first started the column, I wasn’t really sure how I was going to come up with enough ideas to fill a year’s worth of articles, and now I can’t seem to find the time to put into words all the things that I have to say about MX fitness. My main objective in writing the articles has always been to help out the weekend warriors by providing good, solid advice on how to train for MX. I wanted to dispel.......
Specialized Bicycles Invades MX (By Tim Crytser) Posted 1/5/05
Cardiovascular training for motocross has long been dominated by pounding out the miles the good old fashioned way; running. That may all be changing soon considering guys like Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed are turning in their running shoes for bicycle shoes. Considering the type of condition these two top athletes are in, one only needs to look at what they do to train to discover their secret weapon. That secret weapon may just take the form of a motorcycles’ distant cousin, the road bike.......
Another great season of motocross has drawn to a close, as the leaves all over the northeast turn their brilliant colors of red, orange, and yellow. This is always a tell-tale sign that another chapter in our motocross careers has closed and the time to reflect on our successes and failures is upon us. Hopefully, you had more successes than failures and are able to look back on the 2004 campaign as a memorable experience. Whether you failed or succeeded actually......
If there are two words that strike fear into the hearts of motocross racers, its “arm pump,” that mysterious ailment that comes on near the end of your moto, makes your arms feel like concrete blocks and your hands go numb and fly off the grips. Arm pump has been responsible for countless crashes and lost positions over the years. As a former racer, I remember getting arm pump so badly I couldn’t pull the clutch lever, couldn’t pull the brake lever, couldn’t hold onto the grips and—worst of all—couldn’t shut the throttle off!
Arm pump ranges in severity from slightly annoying to completely debilitating. One would think.....
The last article I posted on Racer X Online dealt with the five components of a good training program: Nutrition, Strength Training, Cardiovascular Conditioning, Flexibility and Rest. In this article, let’s take a closer look at nutrition. As I mentioned in the previous article, food provides the energy your body needs to train and race. You can expect your energy levels to be a direct reflection of what you eat. I remember back in the day when my dad would always say, “You better eat a big steak .....

Ten days from now, the biggest motocross race in the world, the 2004 Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships, will take off from the starting gate at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The 1,386 finalists in 33 classes – pared down from a qualifying field of more than 20,000 entries – will race three 20-minute motos in the hot Tennessee sun. The following are five crucial tips that your Virtual Trainer knows can help you make it through the week.....
So, you decided you want to get in better shape for the upcoming Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Nationals this summer? Or maybe you just want to start hammering those guys you compete against week in and week out at the local track? Okay, let’s talk about the things that make up a good training program.
The 5 components of a good training program are:.......
So far, we have covered in detail how to train during the
off and pre-seasons. Now that the season is in full-swing, its time to talk about your in-season program. If you want to get the most out of your MX training, you should be incorporating three separate training phases throughout the year. The first phase we covered was the
off-season
program which is dedicated to
doing what we call "conditioning lifting." This allows the muscles and joints to recover and prepare for the next season of riding........
