Loretta Lynn's Primer

|The 2007 Loretta Lynn's 500 meter rowing challenge leader board.
Last year at Loretta Lynn's (2007), Virtual Trainer, Concept2 Rowing and Man and Machine made the long journey down Interstate 70 towards the most storied and prestigious amateur motocross race in the World. Were we going there to race? In a way, yes but none of us are fast enough to qualify for the big race so we had to invent a race of our own. The Concept2/Man and Machine/Virtual Trainer 500 meter rowing challenge was born and our way of saying we raced at Loretta's.
Earlier last year at the High Point National, Greg Hammond from Concept2 Rowing, Rob Hill, owner of the TransformX Moto Endurance Training System and I saw a booth where the marines were having a contest to see who could do the most pull-ups. It was by far the most popular event besides the race itself garnering quite a crowd. Greg, a guy who thinks if you are not riding your bike you should be rowing somewhere, wanted to do the same type thing with his rowing machines. Since so many of the top pros including, James Stewart, Trey Cannard, Kevin Windham and even Ricky Carmichael when he was riding use the rower as well as the renowned Millsaps Training Facility we all thought it was a good idea and a way of introducing the rower as well as Robs new training system to the motocross community....and punish a few people along the way.
If you aren't familiar with rowing, 500 meters should take the average guy somewhere around 1 minute and 50 seconds. Travis Pastrana has World Class speed with a time of 1 minute 28 seconds while the fastest guy in the World sets a blistering pace of 1 minute 14 seconds. Ricky Carmichael isn't bad and comes in with a time of 1 minute 34 seconds while always fast and fit Jeff Ward set a time of 1 minute 35 seconds. Rowing 500 meters sounds easy enough at first but if you have ever done it you are fully aware of the devilish type of pain that wells up in your legs and lunges, even if it only takes a minute and change. Last year we had well over 200 people try the rower at Loretta's; some made it, many more did not! If you were one of the brave souls who tried your best but came up a bit short, let this be the shot across the bow that fires you up to compete again this year. If you have forgotten your time, check here to see where you placed in relation to the fast guys. You have three more weeks to get ready.
Last year, Concept2 donated two rowers for us to use at the Ranch and give away to the two fastest rowers of the week. Only a few people were able to throw down a lap faster than Ricky and no one was able to beat Travis. This year we are going even bigger with a two tent setup and again we are giving two brand new rowers to the fastest guys/girls at the Ranch. Along with the rowers, Rob will be giving away a complete TransformX training system to any one who can beat Travis's time and Fuel Clothing has donated plenty of swag to be given away as well.
The lucky thing for Ranch goers this year is that you have time to prepare for the 500 meter challenge. Whether you have come to Loretta's as one of the fastest guys in the country or are just along for the ride, this is your chance to walk away with not only a Coveted Loretta Lynn's Championship but a 1800 dollar rower that will keep you in Championship form. To make sure you are ready follow the 3 workouts below and this year, bring your shoes as many of you found out that the rower can make a bloody mess of your heels if your choose to wear sandals!
