They are great for decompressing the spine and joints and yes, they can stretch the back muscles some but you can also just stretch as well for similar benefits. For you gravity is the enemy and inversion tables just take you out of gravity and actually reverse it on your body.
Learning correct standing posture and learning to activate your core while you work all day can also alleviate some or all of your symptoms. That type of "therapy" is usually called postural integration and I have personally seen so many people feel so much better standing at work just by relearning to stand and sit in a way where your spine actually takes the vertical load and your core is always activated. Also the load is correctly distributed across your feet.
I know it sounds hokey but trust me man, it works. I know for myself and others that it totally works.
