Post subject:  Proper amount of rest...?

I have a 14 yr old son who has really amped up his training and activity level. I'm concerned with him over training. Any tips and ideas on prevention and proper amounts of rest? Currently he's taking a summer phys ed class for extra credit. This is 5 days a week for 2.5 hours/day for a month. 2-3 days a week he will ride his bicycle home (10 miles). He's also doing cross country which has informal pre-season runs 4 nights a week. The xc work-outs vary from short interval training to doing 4 mile runs. Thursday and Friday's are pretty much rest days and getting ready for hare scramble or enduros on Saturday or Sunday. My wife and I are trying to really pay attention to his rest and nutrition. So far he's handling well. We were reluctant to let him take on such a schedule but he convinced us he'd be fine. Just don't want to risk injury or health.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. For the most part it is pretty hard to over train a 14 year old who is in pretty good shape. Especially if it is only for a few months. Typically it is harder to get them to do any training at all as opposed to doing too much. But with that said, look for signs of fatigue. Restless sleep, loss of appetite, general fatigue through out the day. Check out this article for more tips.

Hope this helps and sorry for the delay.
